The Association of Geoconservation Groups

GeoConservationUK has a membership of over 50 Local Geoconservation Groups, previously known as RIGS Groups (Regionally Important Geological and geomorphological Sites) across the British Isles.

GeoConservationUK exists to promote local geological/geomorphological sites for education and public benefit and works towards a British Isles perspective, focusing on the common purposes and issues of local interest to Groups.

Local Geological / Geomorphological Sites (LoGS)

Government guidance uses the term Local Sites for non-statutory sites, as distinct from the Sites of Special Scientific Interest [SSSIs] which are protected by government statute.

This section contains templates for site designation and site monitoring.

RIGS Handbook

The First Edition of the RIGS Handbook was published in 1999 by RSNC with the financial support of English Nature, the Hanson Environment Fund, Shell UK, and Scottish Natural Heritage.

UK GAP

The UK Geodiversity Action Plan (UKGAP) raises the profile and importance of geodiversity and support its advocacy across the UK.

It provides a framework in which actions for geodiversity can be captured in one place (through a website), allowing a range of organisations, groups and individuals to demonstrate their achievements in a UK-wide context.

England’s Geodiversity Charter

The Geodiversity Charter for England provides a vision where…

“Geodiversity is recognised as an integral and vital part of our environment, economy and heritage that must be safeguarded and managed for current and future generations”

Published by the English Geodiversity Forum, this Charter sets out how we can all work towards this vision and the contribution that all sectors of society can make.
